Day 8: High School Class and activities

Alex and Ada gave a great speech for the teachers and principal!

Timmy:
Today, we went to Hakuyo High School with our host siblings since this is their school. We went to our first hour which was Chemistry class. We did a little experiment with water, salt, and ethanol and observed the reactions between them.

After that class we went to English which is our second hour. We met more people and became judges for a debate whether the high school should continue to have school uniforms or not.

Finally the third hour was physics class. We learned basic physics about why the sun is red while it was setting. The first three hours were fun and got to meet many nice and friendly school students.

Ada:
Fourth period was English with the first years, they took us on a tour around the school campus and were only supposed to speak in English when talking with us. We were careful to avoid the areas where students were having classes. We got to see the pool, the tennis courts and the top sixth floor of the building.

Then, we ate lunch. Only two of the Japan Trip students sat at a table, and Hakuyo students could pick which of us they wanted to sit with. I felt like a celebrity, and I had a good time chatting with everyone in a mix of English and Japanese, and enjoying the packed lunch my host family made for me.

(Here are some bento our host families made for us!)

Fifth period was also English, this time with the second years. First, we did the kendama, which is a Japanese toy that takes a lot of precision and patience.

Secondly, we did origami, my tablemates and I were both very confused by the steps written in English about making a bow. They also had to speak only in English, while I spoke in Japanese. We were surprised to find that we had specific interests in common.

Douachee:
Our group started with the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The tea is a but bitter so we were given a sweet snack first. The theme of the snack was hydrangea flowers and the snack looked like one. It was a quiet ceremony, but it was interesting to watch.

The next club we went to was the Karuta Club. Karuta is a card game where they read Japanese sentences and if you see the card with the sentence, you hit it away and collect it. The members of the club made it to Nationals. It was very fun to play with them.

Mai Xia:
After the two clubs we went to, we then headed towards しょど (Calligraphy Club). We learned a little about the history of Calligraphy which was pretty nice! We then practiced writing with the brush and got to write kanji after practicing. Some of the kanji that we wrote was Sora (Sky), Shinobi (Ninja), Hana (Flower), and more.

The last club we went to was けんど (Kendo Club). The martial arts between the students was so COOL! It was some of our first times in seeing Kendo Martial Art as well, so we were amazed when we saw their fencing skills. The combats were pretty intense as we continued watching them fencing!

(This is club members sparring, not us)

(The International club students stayed with us until our host brother/sister were done with their activities.)
