Day 8: Attending Classes at High School

Amy:
We arrived at Hakuyo High School and talked about what we did yesterday. I said that I went to Gumyogi park with my host family sister and we walked their dog. We then talked about what we ate and showed the bento lunch that our host families made for us. Can't wait to try.

We then went to the teachers office and Megan made a speech of what she did with her host family and Hailey said where we are going next.

We gave the Principal a Wisconsin scenery photo book:

Our first class was English and we got split into many groups, whereas, all the American students were with 4 or more Japanese students. The students asked our names and wrote out name-tags for us, and we showed our photo album to them.

Our next class was music. In music class, the students did a demonstration of the "beat canon" by clapping their hands and slapping their thighs to different rhythms. After the demonstration, we were split into 4 groups and went over the music sheet. We learned the school beat and presented it group by group.

Next: Biology lab. During the lab, we grabbed a glass slide and a small piece of cotton. We squirted a few drops of liquid with a microorganism [Paramecium] and a red liquid on the top of the cotton. We then placed a smaller glass slide on top of the cotton. Looking through the microscope, we could see the microorganism moving fast. The cotton fibers trapped them so we could see without them zooming out of view constantly.

After biology, we had English class again. This time it was not in a big hall but in a classroom. We were to speak in Japanese while the Japanese students spoke in English. We also shared our photo album also and then lunch time came.

Annalee:
Lunch time was great! I got to talk and walk with other students including my host sister. We watched dance practice for the sports festival. Practice was amazing. Me and another student exchanged Instagrams and art.

After lunch we had chemistry! We mixed a [saturated] salt solution and ethanol and it made a powder appear. We tried it with putting one in first then the opposite. We used logical thinking to solve why this happened.

After chemistry we tried out some after-school clubs! We tried karuda which is a very difficult card game involving poems and matching two poems, then swatting at the matching card to the poem you hear. There's 120 poems to memorize!

Then we played a different card game, where if we got a monk we kept it, if we got a bald monk we had to put all cards we had in the center. If we got a woman we got to take all cards in the pile. Whoever has most cards wins.

Next we tried calligraphy! It was so so so much fun! I learned a ton of new kanji! I got to write it and make a new friend. After we took a picture all together.

Then we went to a tea ceremony with the tea ceremony club. It was very quiet and peaceful. We got to try anko sweets and green tea. I am not a huge fan of green tea, but overall very cool.

Next we tried Kendo, it's fencing but with long bamboo 'swords'. We got to try traditional Kendo protective clothing and practiced fighting. We even got to wear the masks and have short matches with each other. It was very fun and very tiring.

At the end of the day we waited for our host siblings. Then we go home with them and look forward to a fun weekend in Yokohama!
