Day 4: Daruma factory, sushi, make rice cracker

Tanner: We got back together today with the group to make Daruma dolls. It was raining today and we had to walk to get there, so we got a bit wet. When we made it to the place we all sat down and the Daruma shop owner explained to us how to make the Daruma one step at a time.

It was hard to paint it to make it look perfect, but in the end most turned out well. The shop had lots of Daruma and other masks, it was all very interesting and I had a great time.

Hailey: It was raining pretty hard so we took a taxi to a conveyor=belt sushi place. Most of the sushi costs about 100 yen so it was really cheap! The sushi was super yummy. In the sushi restaurant there was also ice cream. The ice cream here is super yummy because most are made from fresh fruits. They also served hamburgers and fries if someone didn’t like to eat fish. When you are done eating the sushi off of the plates you put it in this dish-counting contraption that will count the amount of plates eaten. When you get five plates in the machine it will have a small cartoon playing on a screen to see if you won a little prize. Overall, the conveyor belt sushi place was super yummy and cool!

Tanner: after we all ate sushi we walked to a store to make rice crackers or osenbei in Japanese. They taught us in Japanese how to make the osenbei, so I was slightly confused on how exactly to make it. We put the crackers onto a grill and flipped it over and over until it started to bubble. Then we pressed it down to flatten and cook the cracker. After cooking it to a golden brown we brushed it over with soy sauce for flavor. We explored the store and ate some sample osenbei after and it was very fun and tasty.
